Proportion of people reporting they experienced racial prejudice in the past 6 months

Nationally in 2022, 60% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18 years or over reported they had experienced at least one form of racial prejudice in the past 6 months. This is an increase from 43% in 2018.

Measure:

There are two measures for this indicator.

Measure 1 is the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people reporting they experienced racial prejudice in the past 6 months, defined as:

Numerator – number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18 years or over who reported they had experienced at least one form of racial prejudice in the past 6 months

Denominator – number of Aboriginal people aged 18 years or over

and is presented as a percentage

Measure 2 is the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people reporting they experienced one or more forms of discrimination/racism in everyday life due to being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, defined as:

Numerator – number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 years or over who were treated unfairly in the last 12 months

Denominator – number of Aboriginal people aged 16 years or over

and is presented as a percentage.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and general community samples were drawn from a professional market and social research panel.

  • In 2018, there were 1,995 residents aged 18+ in the general community (confidence interval +/-2.2%) and 497 (confidence interval +/-4.4%) in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community completed the survey in July–August.
  • In 2020, 1,988 residents aged 18+ in the general community (confidence interval +/-2.2%) and 495 (confidence interval +/-4.4%) in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community completed the survey in July.
  • In 2022, 2522 residents aged 18+ in the general community (confidence interval +/-1.9%) and 532 (confidence interval +/-4.2%) in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community completed the survey in July–August.

The experience of racial prejudice question was updated in 2020 to include ‘social media abuse’, which may have contributed to the rise in experiences since 2018.
