Battery eggs sale and production in the ACT
Commissioned study
This commissioned study has concluded. The final research report was released in November 1998.
The Treasurer agreed to a request by the ACT Government for the Commission to undertake two public benefits tests in accordance with the Competition Principles Agreement. The Commission has been asked to examine whether it is in the public interest for the Australian Capital Territory to:
- ban the sale of eggs from battery caged hens in the ACT (whether produced in the ACT or not)
- ban the production of eggs from battery caged hens in the ACT
- introduce a labelling requirement for all eggs displayed, or sold, in the ACT to indicate the conditions under which the hens produced the eggs.
